PA 300 - FICA Refund Being Paid March 2, 2018

In February 2017, employees that had contributed to the Retiree Health Care Fund were asked to sign a consent letter to request a refund of the FICA taxes deducted from their pay on that 3% contribution.  Employees who consented to a refund of their FICA taxes that were deducted between February 15, 2013 and December 30, 2016, will be receiving their refund, including interest, direct deposited to their net direct deposit account on Friday, March 2, 2018 (active employees ONLY).  Employees who are no longer active will have a check mailed to their address on file on Friday, March 2, 2018.

This refund was processed through the accounts payable system, not the payroll system; therefore, you will not see a deposit on your Employee Access Center account.  You will receive an e-mail notifying you that a deposit is being made to your bank account.

Employees will also receive an e-mail detailing the amount of the refund and the amount of the interest. You will receive a 1099-I in January 2019 for the amount of the interest.  This interest must be claimed on your 2018 taxes.

This refund refers to PA300 that determined that FICA taxes were not owed on a 3% contribution made to the Office of Retirement Services for the Retiree Health Care Fund.  This is not to be confused with PA75, which returned the 3% contribution that was determined to be unlawful.  That refund was made to employees and former employees on February 16. 2018.

CONSENT LETTER - September 2, 2012 - February 14, 2013

Employees who contributed to the 3% Retiree Healthcare Fund between September 2, 2012 and February 14, 2013 will be receiving a consent letter to request a refund of FICA taxes deducted during that time period.  FICA taxes should not have been withheld.

The consent letter will be mailed to employees’ homes on Friday March 2, 2018. In order to receive a refund, you must return the consent form in the enclosed self-addressed stamped envelope by April 16, 2018.
